JAZZ is more than just the music. It is a feeling. A feeling also shaped by two graphic designers: Reid Miles and David Stone Martin. The two of them designed countless covers, thereby giving jazz part of his style.
Reid Miles gave the label Blue Note its face. David Stone Martin designed for various labels like Clef, Verve and Progressive. The work of illustrator David Stone Martin is more playful than the cool, typographical covers Miles made. His drawings have more humor, like the cover he did for Charlie Parker. A big bird is playing a saxophone. Martin made more than 400 album covers, primarily in the period after WWII until the early sixties.
David Stone Martin graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. Besides record covers he illustrated books, magazine covers and advertisements. His work has been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian Institution.
