YOU don’t sit every day in a Space Shuttle. So when a crew of astronauts leaves the earth, an insignia is designed to commemorate the flight. The patch always shows the names of the crewmembers in combination with stars and stripes/space shuttles/bald eagles and a piece of the earth. So we know there even was an astronaut with the name McCool, see the last patch. In total NASA launched 134 Space Shuttle missions. The program is scheduled to be stopped in 2010.
