Third Avenue Line

WHEN I was kid I pinned the booklet from the cd ‘Paul’s Boutique’ from the Beastie Boys on the wall of my room. It gave you a 360 degrees view of a street in New York. I loved the shabby looks of the stores fronts, like Ben’s Shoes, Brothers Fashion and, off course, Paul’s Boutique. I always thought that that grimy street was somewhere in Brooklyn. (But closer inspection shows that it’s shot at Ludlow and Rivington Street in the Lower East Side.)
Anyway, I got that old feeling back when I found these pictures in some corner of the internet. The pictures show the tracks of theThird Avenue Line, an elevated railway in the Bronx. They are taken on a sunny day in April 1973 between the 149th street station and Gun Hill Road. Shortly after, the line was demolished.
